The Patio de las Doncellas courtyard

If someone wished to access the palace, one had to pass through the Patio de la Montería, the “Hunting Courtyard.” As hinted by its name, the courtyard was where Pedro and other royals gathered with their hunting circles before their expeditions. This was also the central patio of the Alcázar, and functions as the primary junction between the fortress' palaces. The courtyard was also home to a fabulous collection of remarkable flora. The walls crawled with curtains of ivy and moss. Towering cypress, palm, and fruitful banana trees sprouted from the fertile earth. Sprinkled in between them were myrtle hedges, pomegranate shrubs, floppy elephant ears that provided plenty of shade, sweeping squares of yellow, fuchsia, red, and orange lantanas, and thorny blankets of pink, red, and violet rose bougainvilleas, to name a few.
